1. Cards

There are a few ways and types of cards that can be used by coaches in coaching sessions. First let us look at picture cards. There are ready made cards being sold by some training companies to assist trainers in their sessions. So, coaches just need to get hold of these cards and use them whenever necessary.

The use of cards is remarkably interesting in coaching sessions, not just it helps clients with clarity it may even help the coach to understand his client better.

Picture cards

A. Choose a Card

The coach gives the stack of cards to the client and asks the client to choose a card that he likes. Give time to the client to select the card.

i) Asks the client to put his card on the table or show his card and asks him questions

ii) Example questions:

i) What made you chose the card?

ii) What were you thinking of when you chose the card?

iii) Who/what does the card remind you of?

iv) How do you describe the card?

v) What is the similarity of the picture in the card and your current situation?

vi) What do you want to share with me about the card?

vii) What does this card mean to you?

B. Choose Three (3) Cards

The coach gives the stack of cards to the client and asks him to select three cards. Give time to the client to choose the cards.

i) Asks the client to put his cards on the table or show his cards and asks him questions.

ii) Example questions:

a) What made you chose these cards?

b) What are the feelings that you have when you decide to choose these cards?

c) In terms of preference, how do you like to arrange the cards?

d) What made you decide to arrange the cards in that manner?

e) How do you want to describe these cards?

f) What are the emotional decisions that you felt when you decide to choose the cards?

C. Pick a Card

The coach holds a stack of cards and asks the client to pick a card. Asks the client to put the card on the table or show to the coach.

i) Asks the client to pick a card and put on the table or show to the coach.

ii) Example questions:

a) What did you feel when you see the card?

b) How can you relate to the card?

c) If given an opportunity do you want to change the card?

d) What does the card remind you of?
